Flash game
The flash game of Defend Your Castle was released on March 13, 2003. The main objective is to prevent invaders from reaching your castle by flinging them in the air or dropping them from a distance with the cursor in order to kill them. The game is split into numbered levels, where higher levels are made more challenging with more invaders, as well as different types of invaders. These levels' increasing difficulty are created dynamically, meaning that the game has an infinite number of levels[1] to be played.
Additionally, another, much more enhanced version of the original game under the same name was released with XGen's XGen Classic Collection pack, along with StickRPG Complete and Fishy. XGen promises all of the games within the pack "playable in fullscreen mode, up to 30% increase in framerate resulting in smooke, more enjoyable gameplay, hidden easter eggs and more."[2]
Ever since the release of the newer versions for the Wii and the iPhone and iPod Touch, this version of Defend Your Castle utilized the simple name of Castle.

WiiWare release
A version of Defend Your Castle was released for download from Nintendo's WiiWare in May 12, 2008 in North America and on August 1, 2008 in Europe and Australia. Unlike its predecessor, the WiiWare downloadable version takes on a child-like fantasy style featuring more stylized, cartoony graphics. For example, the stick figures remain, but have buttons for heads, and the clouds look to be hung by string in front of the background. The cursor in the flash version is replaced by a bread clip controlled by the position of the Wiimote.
This version, along with the iPhone and iPod Touch version, does not include as much quality invaders though the level count is still high. However, the Wii version is accustomed with multiplayer fit to play with four players.
The WiiWare version of Defend Your Castle received good reception from many which resulted in the release of a similar edition for iPhone and iPod Touch.
This release also merits its own forums and place of discussion here.
iPhone and iPod Touch release
Released in April 2009, this is very similar to the WiiWare version. Of the many differences, however, is the absence of the bread clip used as the initial cursor previously.
Here are the forums specifically for this version.
Upgrades and Accessories
Along with picking up your enemies and dropping them to their demise, you may also upgrade your buildings, use medieval artillery, convert foes to friends, cast spells, and much more. Below are the different upgrades for each edition of Defend Your Castle
Flash game upgrades
Here are the upgrades included in the flash game version of Castle:
- Repair - Fixes damage done by enemy units.
- Fortify - Raises the castle walls for better defense.
- Temple - Allows the player to convert enemies to allies by dropping them within the castle.
- Archery Range - Allows the player to train converts into archers that shoot enemies from afar.
- Demolition Lab - Allows the player to deploy dynamite strapped converts by clicking them beneath the armor bar on the screen. Clicking on the kamikaze detonates them.
- Workshop - Allows the player to train craftsmen which repair the damage done to your castle automatically.
- Menapool - Allows you to train wizards which can cast various spells.
Spells
You must have the Menapool upgrade in order to cast spells. Below are the list of spells your wizards can cast:
- 'Mana Bar - Indicates how much mana you have to cast spells. Spells light up when you can cast them, and training more wizards increase your maximum amount of mana and the speed at which it regenerates.
- Kill (hot-keys 1 or a) - Uses 300 mana to destroy any emeny unit immediately.
- Detonate (hot-keys 2 or s) - Uses 800 mana to create an explosion which kills all units within the blast radius.
- Conversion (hot-keys 3 or d) - Uses a whopping 2,000 mana to instantaneously transform an enemy unit of any kind into a convert under your own bidding.
WiiWare and iPhone and iPod Touch upgrades
Unlike the flash game, this has more wacky ways of upgrades and a more variety as well. Each kind of upgraded is present through the four towers of your castle, which must be purchases through your points (PTS) earned.
The Pit of Conversion
The Pit of Conversion is the cheapest upgrade and is separate from the towers at 5,000 PTS. Thus, it is recommended for its inexpensiveness and essential usability within the game. Its overall purpose is to drop enemies within the Pit, in the form of a blue bucket, resulting in them becoming converts fighting to help defend your castle.
After purchasing the first upgrade, a second reform entitled Improved Conversion costs 60,000 PTS to convert foes faster than the standard pit. This proclaims a steady supply of recruits for the castle.
A third hefty upgrade at the cost of 200,000 PTS for the Pit is called the Advanced Conversion which converts enemies faster than the Improved Pit.
The Four Towers
After attaining a certain amount of converts and PTS, you can purchase various upgrades from the four towers and assign your proselytes to these towers. Each of the towers represent archery, magic, fortification, and demolition. Like the Pit of Conversion, there are three major upgrades you can buy for each, which all strengthen the power of your kingdom tremendously. However, it costs a hefty amount of PTS to do so.
